Mussels and Fries

Mussels are in season right now and up until a few years ago I had never tried them. I was never great at trying different shellfish apart from prawns and lobster (especially after a bad experience with an oyster!) However my husband convinced me to try them one day on holiday in Canada and I was hooked. They were so delicious!

Especially when they are served in a flavourful broth, from garlic and parsley to a Thai coconut broth, I’m all for it. Mussels to me seem like a special dish, like something that you treat yourself to in a restaurant or when on holiday. But when I discovered that most supermarkets sell them all ready prepared for you I was so happy.

I bought these garlic and butter mussels from Aldi and decided to make them for a ‘romantic’ dinner for two. Now and again, my husband and I like to create a date night at home after my daughter has gone to bed. If we can’t go to a restaurant regularly then why not treat ourselves at home? It’s corny I know!

So whether its for Valentines Day, date night or simply a treat for yourself, I highly recommend trying these. They are so easy and ready within minutes. I served mine with some fries that I made in the air fryer.

I simply sliced up some large Maris pipers into fries and soaked them in water for half an hour to get rid of any excess starch. Then I patted them dry, tossed them in some oil and salt and pepper and cooked them in the air fryer for approximately 20 minutes. You can also do this in an oven and you will end up with crispy homemade fries.

And there you have it. An incredibly quick meal which feels a little special. We almost felt like we were on holiday…almost. Do you like mussels? If so, how do you like yours? Leave me a comment below 🙂
